This was the first encounter between Argentina and Iceland and this was Iceland first match at a FIFA World Cup. The Argentines played with flair in the first quarter of the encounter and that resulted in a goal in the 19′ through a Marcus Rojo cross that was intercepted by Sergio Aguero and smashed into the top corner of the net. Iceland responded in like manner by equalizing in the 23′ following a shot by Sigurdsson which Willy Caballero, the Argentine goalkeeper parried away into the waiting feet of Finbogason to slot home Iceland’s first goal at the World Cup.

In the second half, both teams exhausted their substitutions. The biggest highlight of the second half was when Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick in the 64′. With the draw, Argentina failed to win their opening match at a World Cup tourney for the first time since losing to Cameroun at the 1990 World Cup following a lone strike by Francois Omam-Biyik.
