Goal Scored by: Gimenez (90’)

The Pharaohs of Egypt qualified for the World Cup in a very thrilling fashion following a 94’ injury-time penalty against Congo DR in Alexandria that was expertly delivered by their star player, Mohamed Salah. The match against Uruguay started with both things sizing each other up at the Ekaterinburg Arena in the first half. In the first half, Egypt had just two shots on target while Luis Suarez scored a goal that was disallowed for offside.

The second half commenced with Uruguay stepping up the play while the Egyptians contained it. In the 50’, Egyptian midfielder Tarek Hamed was injured and he was replaced with English-born Morsy. Uruguay also had their first substitution replacing De Arrasceta with Rodriguez in the 59’. Egypt replaced Ahmed Warda, the best player in Greek League in 2017 with Sohbi, new Huddersfield signing.

Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez had good combinations in the second half with nice flicks and with Cavani’s free kick hitting the bar. Another free kick in the 90’ by Sanchez from the corner flank saw Uruguayan defender, Jose Gimenez towering so high to nod the ball into the net. With the Uruguayan win against Egypt, no African team has beaten a South American opposition since Cameroun defeated Colombia at Italia ’90 and Egypt has never won any match at the FIFA World Cup.
