D’Tigress defeat Mali to reach AfroBasket Final, grab World Cup Ticket

Nigeria female Basketball team, D’Tigress defeated defending champions Mali, 48 – 47 in the semi-final game at the AfroBasket Women’s Championship in Bamako, Mali to qualify for the final of the tournament. With the win, the Nigerians have qualified for 2018 FIBA World Cup hosted by Spain.

The match against Mali was a difficult and low scoring encounter. In the first quarter, the Nigerians won by 10 – 7, while the second quarter scores stood at 23 – 12. The third and final quarter saw the Malians come up with spectacular displays as the won the final quarter but wasn’t enough to edge out the Nigerians.

Ezinne Kalu-Phelps had a total of 11 points and six assists while Evelyn Akhator added ten rebounds. Nigeria will play the winner of the second semi-final – either Senegal or Mozambique on Sunday. This is the sixth straight time, a #AfroBasketWomen host country would fail to win the tournament.
