Nigeria defeated defending champions, Senegal 58 – 54 at the FIBA AfroBasket Women’s Championship on Wednesday night, making it five successive wins in five matches in Group B of the tournament in Bamako, Mali. Both sides had already qualified for the quarter-finals following their stellar performances in their last four matches.
The game got so physical to the extent that a Senegalese player required medical attention because of a shoulder complaint. Nigeria led all the four quarters – 14 – 13 in the first, 34 – 26 in the second, 48 -41 in the third and at the end of the final quarter, the deficit was reduced to just four points. Evelyn Akhator impressed with a stellar performance with 15 points and 10 rebounds to her advantage.
