Andy Murray loses 2017 Wimbledon quarter-final to Sam Querrey

Defending champion, Andy Murray lost the quarter-final encounter with Sam Querrey at Wimbledon. Querrey won 3-6 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-1 to become the first American after Andy Roddick in 2009 to reach a Grand Slam semi-final. The Scot won a set but struggled physically, thereby losing 12 of the last 14 games. Murray has been nursing a hip injury in his build-up for Wimbledon. Querrey will play 7th seed Marin Cilic in the semi-final.

24th seed Querrey capitalised on Murray’s injury and took his chances. He hit 70 winners, with 30 of them from the net. Querrey set a new record by reaching his first semi-final in this 42nd Grand Slam. During the post-game conference, Murray told the press that “throughout the tournament, I’ve been a little bit sore but I tried my best, right to the end I gave everything I had, and I’m proud about that but it’s obviously disappointing to lose. There was an opportunity there so I’m sad that it’s over. Before the tournament, it was very short-term solutions because you want to play Wimbledon.
