President Emmanuel Macron of France today described Paris’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics as the best response to the growing threats in his home country which is also antithetical to the spirit of the Olympics that values openness, tolerance and respect for the environment. He was quoted as saying “Olympic values are our values. They are threatened, called into question by many today, so it’s the best moment to defend them.”

Paris hosted the 1900 and 1924 games and had failed bids in 1992, 2008 and 2012 games. Paris is competing against Los Angeles, publicly backed by Donald Trump whom Macron disagreed with about a month ago after the American President exited the Paris Accord on Climate Change. Los Angeles like Paris has hosted the Olympics twice in 1932 and 1984. Macron also promised that they will not leave any “white elephant” project behind.
