Venus Williams found wanting in fatal car crash

Former world number one, Venus Williams caused a car crash earlier this month according to a police report yesterday. The Palm Beach Gardens Police posited that witnesses told investigators that Williams jumped the red light in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia on June 9 and it led to a car crash that injured 78-year-old Jerome Barson, who died a fortnight after.

In her statement, she told investigators that she entered the six-lane intersection when the light was green and was forced to stop midpoint because of the traffic ahead of her. The seven-time grand slam winner also said she didn’t see the Barson’s car when she crossed into their lane. The police have said that the crash remains under investigation but in the meantime, she hasn’t been cited or charged and she wasn’t driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Malcolm Cunningham, Williams’ attorney said in a statement that ”she offers her deepest condolences to a family that have lost their loved one.” Linda Barson, Jerome’s wife was the one manning the wheels at the time of the incidence. She rammed her 2016 Hyundai Accent into Williams at the intersection when her light turned green and she was unable to stop in time. She suffered unspecified moderate injuries.
