Arsenal win the 2023 Community Shield defeating Manchester City on penalties

By defeating Manchester City, Arsenal has begun the English season the way it intends to finish it. After drawing 1-1 during ordinary time, Arsenal defeated City 4-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Community Shield on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri were unable to convert for the Treble champions, therefore the Gunners won on a penalty kick by Fabio Vieira.

With Cole Palmer’s stunning opening goal, Mikel Arteta’s team appeared to be headed for disaster, but Leandro Trossard’s fiercely deflected goal 11 minutes into stoppage time saved a 1-1 draw and forced a penalty shootout.

The early exchanges had been totally controlled by Pep Guardiola’s team, with Julian Alvarez’s header narrowly missing making an impact.

Arsenal, who gave their summer acquisitions their first starts, improved and created the best two chances of the first 45 minutes. Both of Kai Havertz’s opportunities were expertly turned away by City goalie Stefan Ortega.

Man City stepped up again in the second half, and Palmer appeared to have won it 13 minutes from time when he curved a superb left-foot strike into the far corner.

However, deep into stoppage time, Trossard’s uncertain attempt deflected in off Manuel Akanji, and Arsenal completed the amazing comeback from the spot.
