Djokovic defeats Nadal to win the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in three straight sets  6-3 6-2 6-3 to win a seventh Australian Open title.

The Serbian proved to be a tough nut at Melbourne Park and had a 3 – 0 advantage in twelve minutes which was a far cry from their last encounter that lasted about six hours and five sets.

Djovokic dominated it all this time around and the game was wrapped in two hours, four minutes. Djokovic has now won 13 out of the last 16 encounters with Nadal.

In his victory speech, Djovokic recounted how he overcame personal struggles, “I’m trying to contemplate the journey of the last twelve months,I’ve been through surgery and to be standing here and managing to win this title and three out of four titles is amazing, I am speechless. This is definitely the best tournament in the world.

Runner up, Rafael Nadal said, “I have been going through tough times over the past year. I only played in nine events and had to retire from two, and I was not able to play a professional match since the US Open.  Even though tonight was not my night, it was very important for me in coming back from injury. I believe I played a good two weeks of tennis and it is great energy and inspiration for what is coming. I will keep fighting and keep practising to give myself better chances in the future.”
