Nigeria qualifies for AFCON 2019 after a draw against South Africa

Super Eagles of Nigeria has qualified for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 to be hosted by Cameroon. The crucial match played at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg ended in a 1 – 1 draw.

Nigeria opened the scoring in the 10′ minute when Simon Kalu’s cross was deflected by Buhle Mkhwanazi and it resulted in an own goal. Bafana Bafana of South Africa equalised in the 26′ minute through Lebo Mothiba.

As it stands, Nigeria has ten points while South Africa has nine points with both teams having one last fixture left. Nigeria against Seychelles and South Africa against Libya. The encounter is a must win for South Africa if they must qualify for next year’s tourney.

This was the first time South Africa will concede in this current AFCON qualifiers and the first time Nigeria will qualify for the continental competition since they won the title in 2013 under the late coach, Stephen Keshi.
