Fabio Coentrao joins Sporting Lisbon on loan

Real Madrid of Spain defender, Fabio Coentrao has returned back to his native Portugal to join Sporting Lisbon on a one-year deal. He joined the Los Blancos from Benfica in a 30 million Euros deal back in 2011. He tweeted about his departure from the Spanish capital and also said: ā€œIā€™m very happy to have the chance to play at this great club.ā€

The left full-back has had an injury-plagued career which affected his chances of having good play times. For the 2015/2016 season, he was on loan at Monaco and predictably, he played a total of 15 games for the French municipality based club then he returned to Real Madrid.

Expectedly, he would be looking forward to rebuilding his career in Sporting Lisbon after falling from the pecking order of the Zinedine Zidane led-squad. Peripheral players found play time as the Madrid games calendar stretched from the World Club Cup, Champions League Final and were busy up until the last day of the season.

He played a total of 105 matches in five full seasons for Real Madrid with the exception of the full loan spell at Monaco in 2015/2016 season. Sadly, he has never played up to 20 league games in a season and in his sojourn at Real Madrid, he has won two La Liga titles, two Champions League titles and one Copa del Rey title.
