Germany just won the U-21 championship in Krakow, Poland edging out Spain 1 – 0. Spain were the favourites to clinch the trophy having scored twelve goals in their last four wins but it took a Mitchell Weiser goal to truncate their dreams of winning their fifth European Championship.
The Spaniards couldn’t replicate their trademark free-flowing as the Germans nipped them in the bud. The tie-breaker came five minutes to half time when Jeremy Toljan’s cross was headed in by Weiser. Spain created few chances and the most notable were Saul Niguez’s strike that made the German goalie stretch to parry it away.
Spain was looking forward to replicating Italy’s record at the U-21 Championships by winning their fifth title that never came to fruition. The Germans just won their second title in this cadre. The first was in 2009.
