Chelsea suffer worst defeat in 28 years as Manchester City trounce them 6 – 0

Chelsea suffered an abysmal defeat in the hands of league leaders, Manchester City on Sunday. The Citizens defeated the Blues 6 – 0, their worst defeat since losing 7 – 0 to Nottingham Forest in 1991.

The defeat at the Etihad puts their top four contentions in jeopardy having lost their last three away Premier League games, conceding twelve goals in the process and scoring none.

Manchester City ran riot in the first half by scoring four goals and taking the match beyond Chelsea with Sergio Aguero scoring a hattrick – his second hattrick in eight days.

In the first twenty-five minutes, Manchester City proved their dominance with Raheem Sterling opening scoring in the 4th minute and Sergio Aguero scoring a stunner in the 13th minute.

Aguero scored a second for himself and the third goal for Manchester City by capitalizing on an error from Ross Barkley in the 19th minute. Ilkay Gundogan completed the rout in the 25th minute.

The Argentine scored his third goal from the penalty spot after Cezar Azpilicueta had a rash challenge on Raheem Sterling in the 18′ yard area. Aguero is now the joint top scorer with Mohamed Salah with 17 goals each.

Raheem Sterling scored the sixth and final goal of the match in the 80th minute when substitute David Silva gave Oleksandr Zinchenko a nice in-behind pass and he laid it down for the English man to slot it in from close range.

Chelsea is now a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United. This is Maurizio Sarri worst defeat as a manager. In his post-match press briefing, he said, “My sensations before kick-off were good, as they were during the week.”

“We conceded a stupid goal in the opening minutes that affected us for the whole game. Manchester City plays fantastic football and I saw an extraordinary team. We had a total blackout.”

Sergio Aguero received a man of the match award for his performance and also equaled Alan Shearer’s record of 11 hattricks in the Premier League.
