A fire incidence erupted at an unlicensed housing at Rio de Janeiro football club, Flamengo on Friday killing ten youth team players and injuring three.

The three injured players were rushed to the hospital with one of them being in critical condition with at least 30% burns.

Unfortunately, the ten dead players were aged 14 – 16 years old and were either playing for the club or were having trials there.

In a statement released by the Rio de Janeiro Mayor’s office, it cited that the lodging was built illegally without a permit.

“On the project protocol, the area is described as a parking lot. There is no register of a new request for a license to use the area as a dormitory.”

Thirteen people escaped the burning building, but the intensity of the fire stalled the efforts of the firefighters and prevented them from accessing the building.

Club President, Rodolfo Landim described it as “the biggest tragedy in Flamengo’s 123-year history.”
