Portugal win third place at Confed Cup
Portugal won the third place spot by defeating Mexico 2 -1 today in Moscow. The highly pulsating match saw the European champions score an own goal and missed a penalty kick. Adrien Silva scored an extra time screamer as Portugal came from behind to beat Mexico.
The Portuguese lost a penalty through Andre Silva in the first half while Mexico got lucky when Chicharito’s cross was deflected into Portugal’s own net by Luis Neto. The European champions had a shaky defence and the buildup led to the own goal.
Real Madrid of Spain defender, Pepe scored for the Portuguese in stoppage time, his first competitive international goal since 2012. Learning from their semi-final penalty shootout loss to Chile, Adrien Silva confidently tucked in a penalty kick they won 15′ minutes into extra time after Miguel Layun committed a foul in the 18′ yard area.
