Ivorian clinches Gold at World Taekwondo Championship

Ruth Gbagbi of Ivory Coast has won Gold at the World Taekwondo Championship going on in South Korea. The 23-year old defeated Kimia Alizadeh of Iran in the female lightweight final to clinch the Gold medal. At the Rio Olympics last year, she won the bronze medal and the Government of Ivory Coast awarded her US$51,000 and a house.

The 2017 event is the 23rd signature edition of the World Taekwondo Federation signature tournament and it’s the 7th time it will be hosted in South Korea. This year’s edition is playing host to 971 athletes from 183 countries. The Ivorian contingent departed the shores of Abidjan on June 18th with 19 athletes to feature at the championship.
